INTRODUCTION-
This Project was about combing all our learnings of all four modules into one integrated project. This project created an opportunity for me to recognise how different fundamental concepts and skills learnt in each module came together for a holistic creative design development process.
PRE-TASK-
Organic form-BANANA
About my organic form-
Banana is a yellow curved shape long slender shaped fruit, on the outside peel it has a spotty texture and is smooth to touch, whereas the inner edible part is round in shape, has whitish skinny colour with brown spots in the middle, it is soft and slimy to touch. The top stem is greenish brown in colour and has a brown hairy substance coming out of it, it is very rough to touch.
Material That I used to make my 3D form-
For the outer peel I used a yellow foam sheet as the texture was very similar to that of a real banana, also it was easier to fold and cut.
I was not able to achieve the exact half cut shape of a banana by just using the foam sheet, so I decided to fill POP inside it, which gave it a proper shape and also added the exact colour that I needed on the inside part.
I also used poster paints on the outer peel in order to add the exact colour.
To add the spotty brown texture on the outer peel, I used a burnt incense stick.
For the rough hair like substance on the top I used coconut's hair, as it looked exactly the same as my banana stem.
FORM ANALYSIS-
FORM ANALYSIS-1
I carefully observed the form of my organic object, in relation to its color, texture, shape, I did enlarged studies of the stem, bottom part and also the inner peel of my banana.
What I observed-
The color of banana is not just plain yellow but it has different shades and tones of yellow, green and brown.
It's elongated and curved in shape because of the sun, so that it can retrieve sunlight, Banana's go through a process called negative geotropism.
A banana is green when its raw, later it changes it color from green to yellow.
Brownish coloured spots starts to appear on the outer peel after 3-4 days because high amounts of ethylene cause the yellow pigments in banana's to decay into brown spots in a process called enzymatic browning.
Whereas the inner peel is really soft and slimy to touch, it also has thread like lines clearly visible on it.
The bottom top view forms an irregular pentagon, whereas the inner edible part when sliced in circular forms 3 triangles.
Learnings and practice of fvl-2 really helped at this stage as I had already observed my organic form in detail and had also done the color and form analysis.
FORM ANALYSIS-2
Struggles and challenges during this task-
Working with sun board has always been a bit challenging for me, as I find it difficult to cut, I couldn't achieve the neatness in my forms, though I had a lot of ideas , I couldn't execute them. I will work on this and try to create neater forms and explore more material.
Things to keep in mind while making a sun board 3d model-
Keep in mind the size and proportion of your form.
Draw the contour of your form before cutting it.
There should be appropriate spacing between the forms in order get the accurate shape.
Half cuts play an important role.
IDEA GENERATION-
Referred to the form analysis sheet to generate ideas and kept in mind the texture, shape, size and the whole form of my banana when I was representing it through lines, shapes and dots.
It was important to keep in mind that the representation should not be through any random dots, shapes or lines but it should keep intact the true essence of the organic form too.
I also tried to apply gestalt principles by carefully trying to minimize the application of unnecessary dots and lines and tried to keep my representations as minimalistic as I could.
I found law of closure the easiest to apply as in that I just had to eliminate certain aspects like the contour or some lines or even subtract something from the top, middle or bottom.
IDEA DEVELOPEMENT-
Selected 8 ideas and further used an iterative approach (that we used in our vector map project) to further develop a diverse range of 2D & 3D ideas.
For me iterative approach has been a process that helped me think and rethink my ideas, it gave me time to revisit and improve my work from time to time until I was satisfied with the outcome.
I used the following techniques to develop more ideas
Combining
Eliminating
Playing with positive negative
Interplay of Black & White
Highlighting
These helped me to diversify my ideas further and try out something unique and different with my form, At first I was feeling stuck after developing 6-7 ideas only, but when I used these techniques, it helped me to just use my already existing explorations and combing, merging, eliminating them further. It reminded of our think lab thinking tools activity wherein we did scamper and slice and dice.
and unintentionally I was also applying gestalt principles in most of them.
EXPLORING COLOR -
While exploring color for the background and creating color swatches, I realised that how the look of my organic form changed when the color of background was changing, though the color of my figure inside remained the same in all, the change in the background color created a whole different look.
In some of them the background was overshadowing my figure whereas in some, the figure was merging with the background.
I carefully had to try different background tones in order to make the composition look as one whole.
I realised that using similar color tones of my organic form in the background made more sense and complemented the whole look very well, instead of using random colours.
Learnings of EOC-1 were really helpful here as I knew how important was it to get a correct color as color plays a major role in communicating a message or a feeling. Here I had to convey the true essence of my organic form through color.
EXPLORING SPACE-
Here in I learnt how to communicate changes with the play of scale and placement of visual elements in space. I tried different placements and scale of my organic form to create a composition and chose the one that communicated the characteristics and attributes of my organic form well, including its texture, color and its essence.
I tried placing the banana slice on a very large scale so that the inner seeds can be clearly visible, but that didn't look so I tried slicing it from between and that made sense as when a banana slice is cut horizontally looked exactly liked that.
So its always better to try 6-7 options before you make a selection, because one cannot choose something if the options are limited.
CONCLUSION-
Overall this Project has helped me to look back at my entire 4 month journey in IIAD'S foundation year and connect the learnings of all the projects with this end term project,
EOC-1 & 2 has taught me how to inquire, question the why behind everything, It has improved my researching skills as well as the need to always look for more. In end term too I applied that learning by questioning the why and then finding out answers to why my organic form is elongated, why does it have brown spots? etc
Learnings of EOC-1 were really helpful here as I knew how important was it to get a correct color as color plays a major role in communicating a message or a feeling. Here I had to convey the true essence of my organic form through color.
FVL-1 & 2 has helped to observe more, to go in depth and details of things, to analysis them, feel them and also it has taught me how to represent them using various lines, shapes and dots. These learnings were applied at the time of form analysis 1 as well as at the time of idea generation and idea development.
M2M and F2F taught me the importance of form and how I can represent a form using so many different materials, keeping the original colour of that material intact. I could apply these learning in Form analysis-2, pre work and all the 3d idea generations.
Think lab has increased my ability to quickly come up with new ideas and application of all the think lab learnings have been done in all projects
Observation, reflective thinking, Analysis, Lateral thinking, and iterative approach have been constant through all 4 modules and were even applied in this end term Project.
