Typographic Voice

PROJECT DOCUMENTATION & REFELCTIVE VLOG

INTRODUCTION-

  • The main objective of this project was to understand, appreciate and sensitise ourselves to typography as a major compositional and stylistic medium of communication design.

  • This course introduced us to the form and function of typography, its stylistic families, formal conventions and terminology and expressive visual qualities.

1-FIND YOUR TYPE-

  • WHAT: Drew a Typeface that best represented my personality.

  • HOW: Looked at different Typefaces from various sources and tried to replicate them.

Learnings & Realisations

  • Tried to build an appreciation and patience for the art of drawing letterforms.

  • Neatness, form, spacing and precision were the few things I had to keep in my mind.

  • Use micron tip pen to outline the letters before inking them.

  • Making grids was helpful in terms of getting the right proportions.

  • I used black poster paint to ink my work and it seemed to work better for me in terms of neatness and stroke as compared to

Tried to create more compositions-

2-TYPE IN ENVIRONMENT-

WHAT: Explored and Studied typography around me in different spaces.

HOW: Looked at different examples of Typography in my surroundings; Street signs, shop signs, graffiti, posters on the wall, hand-painted boards etc. Tried to recreate one of the boards I saw in Musoorie.

  • Why I chose this photograph?- This is a hillside resort in Musoorie which is very close to my heart, it has a great sceneic view and my all time favourite cafe emily's.

  • Tried recreating different typefaces from the environment, looked closely at their characteristics and form.

  • My chosen typeface had a royal and a majestic vibe to it, its a very elegant font, so that is why i chose the word Majestic, also rokeby manor is known as hamlet of the hills, so Majestic Hamlet made a lot sense here.

  • Tried to recreate different letters according to the ones i could see, i figured out the characteristics of the font and recreated other letters keeping those in mind.

RECREATION-

  • I created the final recreation on a sunboard, patsed an A3 size black catridge sheet on it and then wrote the text with a gold painty pen.

  • Tried Recreating the colours and the shiny smooth texture of the actual board.

3-FILM POSTER-

We watched the movie- "The Wrath Of God" and had to create a poster inspired by the movie- its dialouges, emotions, scenes etc.

  • The poster had to be partially digital and partially hand drawn.

ITERATIONS-

Chose the dialougue 'This arrow cannot hurt me"- which is the handwritten part in the poster.

key words-

  • Absurdity

  • Visualisation

  • Composition

  • Character Design

  • Lateral thinking

This inspires me to make a poster showing the evolution of the creative process and playing with textures, as if they were the overlapping emotions that aguirre felt in the journey that took him to death.

FINAL POSTERS-

  • The movie was set in the rainforest, so in the second poster I have tried to keep a similar background

  • Wanted to capture the rustic feel which is also very visible in the way this movie has been shot.

  • The red spots represents blood, also created this image of Aguirre standing in the middle in a pool of blood.

FINALISED-

  • I decreased the opacity of the background to make the type more legible as before the background was very overpowering.

Learnings-

  • How type can also depict emotions.

  • Expressive type played an important role here.

  • Each font has a personality, it has its own character.

4-TYPE ICONIC POSTER-

WHAT: Designed an A3 size Informative poster for one Iconic Typeface

HOW:

  • Chose one Typeface- TEXTURA

  • Researched - about the Typeface designer, type foundry, its history, evolution, context, case studies, and interesting facts.

RESEARCH-

ITERATIONS-

I tried to recreate the font and studied its characteristics and features in depth before creating the final poster.

FINAL ICONIC POSTER-

  • I have highlighted the characteristics of the font like, high contrast, thin serifs etc

  • Mentioned About the brief history of the typeface.

  • I have also included the upper case and lower case letters of the font on wach side of the page border.

  • In the bottom I have mentioned how textura was found, who found it and what is is called.

  • Numbers are also depicted in the bottom right corner

  • I have used a rustic broen background to add to the whole vibe as Textura is one of the oldest typefaces, but interesting it is still used as a display font. eg Hindustan Times.

Learnings-

  • Center alligned text is something that doesnt work for body text, left alligned text works best for that and looks more alligned and organised.

  • Hierarchy and eye movement is something that matters a lot in a poster.

  • I have used alpahbets of textura in the background that works well i the poster and have created a kind of a visual anchor for the poster.

5.CALLIGRAPHY-

OBJECTIVE: Observation and practice

WHAT: Calligraphy -

HOW:

  • Practice with calligraphy guidelines

  • Different tools and mediums

STROKES-

Started the assignment by practicing up & down strokes to get a hang of the different sizes of the nibs, how to hold the pen, when and where to apply presure etc.

LATIN SCRIPT-

INDIC SCRIPT- URDU

  • Urdu as a language has always fascinated me alot, also beacuse my grandmother used to watch a lot pakistani dramas, i found the language very interesting.

  • The fact that urdu is written from left to right made me even more curious to try it out.

COMPOSITIONS-

Realisation-

It was one of the most calming and soothing assignements, Even though I couldnt get the perfect strokes but I enjoyed the proecess a lot, It was something very new and different for me.

6.EXPLORING GRIDS-

WHAT: Wrote four-letter words using the various grids -

HOW:

  • provided with samples of grids printed on sheets

  • Used the grids to draw different words in 2D or a 3D type

Experimented with four different types of grids.

Created any kind of iteration using any medium of choice,

Tried other grids.

CIRCULAR-

DIAGONAL-

ISOMETRIC-

Pressure cooker Assignment-

  • We were given different briefs/ receipies about how the font should look like

  • This task was to be done on a grid sheet.

  • Main focus of this task was to familiarise us with the grid.

7-Construction on Grids- Recreating a typeface

Chosen Typeface- Brittanic bold

Upper case grid construction-

Lower case grid construction-

Areas to improve further upon:

  • I should have focussed more upon the overall layout of the sheet.

  • Should be more careful in order to prevent smudges.

  • Learn to be more patient and careful

Things to keep in mind-

  • Use Water-proof drawing ink instead of fountain ink. Neater results can be produced if this is followed because fountain ink leaves a blotchy appearance.

  • Use micron tip pen to outline the letters before inking them.

  • Make sure areas where the letters are coloured just using micron pen, one should go over them with ink as well to give a uniform appearance.

8-TYPE AS FORM & SPACE-

For this assignement we chose 4 different typefaces for each category-

  • serif

  • sans serif

  • script

  • display

CHOSEN TYPEFACES-

  • -Then created 4 different posters/compositions about the characteristics of that font,

  • -Created zoomed in versions of the alphabet and made different associations.

  • -Played with positive and negative space

  • -It was a fun and a quick activity.

ITERATIONS-

FINAL POSTERS-

9-TYPE IN MATERIAL-

WHAT-

  • Use any material or illustrations to create unique typefaces.

  • Can either do a quote or create letters from A- Z.

ZIPPERS-

  • This was one of the most fun activity, we just had to look around and explore type in as many materials we could.

10-CLASS ASSIGNMENT-

Shape type

  • We were given a sheet consisting of a word printed three times in three different typefaces. All three words had missing part which we had to complete.

  • We were asked to select one typeface from the previous task sheet and recreate the words "ok Inspector Gadget" on a gateway sheet.

  • While performing this task, there were certain areas to be focused upon,

  1. Focus on the characteristics of the chosen typeface.

  2. Focus on the kerning,

  3. Overall layout and neatness.

FINAL BRIEF- CREATE YOUR OWN TYPEFACE

FINDING INSPIRATION-

For this task we visited the Lodhi Colony in Delhi.

  • how do I want my typeface to look like?

  • indic, vintage, folk, raw, dusty, traditional

INSPIRATION MOODBOARD-

After selecting my inspo. and doing initial research, I created a mood board in order to get a better idea on how to move ahead.

  • The main inspiration came from a wall in lodhi road that had textures and patterns painted on it.

  • The patterns had a very authentic indian and rustic vibe to it.

  • So I decided to develope a font similar to this vibe, I saw historical movie posters like, padmavat, bajirao mastani etc,

  • Traditional indian sweet boxes like haldirams, punjab sweets etc and found out that the typefaces had a similar touch to them in terms of contrast, roundness, curves etc.

Collected Visuals that gave me a vibe of my typeface-

ITERATIONS-

For the round and curved serifs I took inspiration from the shapes and patterns of my chosen image from the lodhi art district.

FINAL TYPEFACE ON GRID-

DIGITISED VERSION-

Name of the typeface- "Selene"

Selene is a very indic, folk and a traditional kind of a typeface which also has a modern touch to it beacuse of the high contrast and elegant vibe.

Learnings & Realisations-

  • The final typeface construction was the most tough job to do, it required a lot of iterations, mistakes and mishaps, but at the end i was satisfied with my outcome and it was all worth it.

  • I had to change the stroke weight nd some of the form of the letters while I made it into a digitised version.

  • The grid was very helpful in terms of figuring out how will each letter look like and the form proportion of it.

  • In this project, I also got a better understanding on how to start and maintain physical journal. Unlike what was seen in first term. this time I included more illustrations and material in my journal. This aspect also helped indulge more into the project.

Areas I need to improve more on:

  • Learn to present my work in a more impressive manner.

  • Interact more with my batchmates and faculty to get more insights.

  • Keep in mind the layout of my compositions in terms of text size and allignment

  • Explore and experiment more freely and openly.

APPLICATIONS-

My font SELENE goes well with historic movie posters, Indian sweet boxes, icecream brands, contemporary stores etc.
